Help us build the Web of the future!
Paid Summer Internships in ECS From EnAKTing
Would you like to weave the future of the web and get some great work experience at the same time? The EnAKTing project, headed by Prof. Nigel Shadbolt, Sir Tim Berners-Lee, Dame Wendy Hall, Dr. Nick Gibbins and dr mc schraefel are looking for enthusiastic undergraduates to join the group this summer.
EnAKTing aims to define and create the infrastructure and interfaces needed as we move towards a web of linked data, also known as the semantic web. Our vision is a web as easily accessible and query-able by machine as it is by humans. This will enable an explosion of new, general linked-data applications that let people visualize, understand, use, and publish information in ways not currently possible with today's monolithic applications that have simple, closed data models.
To achieve this we are currently focusing on open government data (see data.gov.uk) and considering ways we can enable people to make better informed decisions, to understand their own environments better and to uncover truths and trends about society. We are very excited about ways we can integrate personal data such as browsing history and Facebook friends in a safe and private manner to create personal interfaces which make it easy to navigate data. For example, "Which of my friends has the greatest life expectancy?" "Where should I buy my food to minimise it's environmental impact?"
An internship in ECS will look great on your CV and could pave the way to an MSc or PhD studies in the future.
You will be working full time for 3 months from 1 July to 30 September 2010. The salary range will depend on your year of study, and will range from £1154-£1509 per month. Your responsibilities may include assisting with the development of Linked Data tools and technologies currently being developed by senior researchers of the group, and independent work producing novel visualisations and applications that use the vast number of public sector data sets.
No prior experience is required, all we ask is that you are enthusiastic, a competent programmer and a fast learner.
If this sounds interesting to you or have any questions/comments please contact us at enakting-internships (at) ecs.soton.ac.uk to arrange to come in for a chat. If you have any examples of your work and CV, do bring them along. The closing date for interested candidates is MONDAY 21 JUNE 2010.
